More sparkly pictures….
…from the 4th of July.
As promised, more photos of colorful explosions and whatnot are now on Flickr.

Hope everyone had a happy 4th of July! More pictures tomorrow….
Well, after Connie’s workshop, I’d meant to revise a story AND get a new one written by Potlatch (tomorrow). I’m one for two on that. Got the story revised so I can mail it off today (Sub #24, my 8th sub to F&SF). No new writing whatsoever, though I did do some outlining on two separate story ideas. So post-Potlatch, I really need to settle in and get at least one of them written up.
Why so little writing? I’m working on breaking into stock photography. At the moment I’m selling pictures through dreamstime and fotolia. These are …
Peter and I snuck off during the week last week to go skiing up at Mt. Baker, which was lovely. Plenty of coverage on the slopes, and it snowed a bit while we were there, so the conditions were pretty good except for when the snow/wind reduced visibility to almost nil. We got back on Friday afternoon, and (surprise!) no power at our apartment. A huge storm had come through Thursday night and many, many trees fell over. (I have pictures of one such tree, and pretty mountain scenery from skiing, that I’ll be posting on my Flickr account when …
Woke up this morning and noticed that the hummingbird feeder on the porch was frozen solid. I think it got down to 20 degrees last night. Of course, my first thought this morning was – excellent, I’ll go out and take pictures of frosty autumn leaves! Which I did. I think my hands are frozen since I stubbornly refuse to wear gloves while taking pictures (makes the camera harder to handle).
But now I’m back inside with a hot cup of coffee, feeling much warmer and quite pleased …
I’m officially a Flickr junkie–I caved and payed for a full-featured account. The ever-so-smart people who designed the site rate the photos on a random mishmash of things (how many times it’s been viewed, comments, who calls it a favorite) to give it an ‘interestingness’ score. Competitive person that I am, I want my photos to get recognized as ‘interesting.’ So I spend way too much time finding groups in which to display said photos. That and I like to look at all the purdy pictures other people are posting. The whole thing is highly addictive. But it’s relatively harmless …
What I learned in my first hour on the beach: (1) Rocks covered in green slime are slippery, (2) climbing onto said rocks to avoid errant waves is a bad idea, and (3) hiking back to the car in wet jeans & shoes is cold.
Other than that (and a bit of rain Friday morning) I managed to stay dry. Friday night the sun came out just in time for sunset, which made for some nice pictures that are now up on my Flickr site.
Have to head to the dentist this afternoon to have a filling replaced. Shudder.
In more cheerful news, tomorrow I’m heading out to the coast for a few days. There are some gorgeous beaches with nifty rock formations and tidepools, so it should be a good place to play photographer. And I’ll also be able to hit the Dungeness Crab festival in Port Angeles. Yum!
I have to assume that when I come back from my little jaunt all rested and recovered, I’ll be bursting with energy to work on one of my three new stories. I keep starting them, …
Kelly Link gave a reading at Powell’s Books on Friday, which was a good excuse for me to head down to Portland to visit tinaconnolly. In addition to the reading (which was excellent–I expected Kelly to read something from Magic for Beginners, but instead she read a story that isn’t out in print yet), we wandered around in Washington Park, found some delicious dark chocolate, and drank mojitos…All in all a very fun trip! I snapped a few pictures, which are up on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/78523822@N00/
I’ve been spending more time on photography lately than writing (thus the new icon – for bigger pix check out my flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/78523822@N00/ ). It’s not necessarily a bad thing…photography is easier on my wrists, but still keeps the creative juices flowing.
This is not to say I haven’t gotten any writing done. Mostly I’ve been focusing my energies on revisions – I polished up my twice-workshopped draft of my spider story and did a first pass of revision on one of my other Clarion stories. I’m still stalled out on my fresh stuff, but rather than force it, …
