Rejection #58
R58 – 44-days from Analog
I am down to only 5 submissions in circulation at the moment, but I’ve got several stories in my ‘need revising’ pile, so hopefully I can get my numbers back up soon.

A 6-day “didn’t work for me” rejection from JJA at F&SF. Austin is somewhat closer to New Jersey than Seattle was, so their already quick rejections will now come even faster than usual!
Rejections 48 and 49:
R48 – A few weeks ago, a 68-day rejection from Tin House.
R49 – A 167-day rejection from Writers of the Future, after having made the finals for quarter 2.
I’m still feeling pretty confident about both stories, and I should be able to get them subbed again by tomorrow.
Rejection #38 – From F&SF: a 7-day “no hold” from JJA.
A 6-day personal rejection from Shimmer. This is a story that’s made the rounds a bit, and I’m not as happy with it as I once was. I think I might set it aside for a while and then give it a rewrite before it goes anywhere else.
Back down to 7 stories in circulation, at: WotF, Realms of Fantasy, Interzone, Futurismic, Tin House, Cemetery Dance, and F&SF.
Rejection #26 – A personalized and fairly positive 52-day rejection from Strange Horizons.
I’m now down to a mere 4 submissions out and circulating, so this weekend I’ll sit down and see where things need to shuffle off to next…
Rejection #21 – Apparently the folks over at WotF are not big fans of giant spiders.
Haven’t checked my spreadsheet, but I think the spiders are due to go to Realms of Fantasy next. That’d be a new market for me, and one that I’ve been meaning to sub to for a while.
And then, on the same day (except that I didn’t bother picking up yesterday’s mail until this morning)…
Rejection #22 – From Asimov’s
That makes 3 rejections in as many days. Expect a post tomorrow listing off a bunch of submissions…
Rejection #19 – Alas. 8 day rejection from JJA at F&SF. I’m getting a lot of “no grab” rejections…need to work on writing catchier openings.
I am pleased to report that 19 rejections makes a stack that is difficult to push a pushpin through. (I impale all my rejections on a pushpin on my corkboard.) Maybe when I hit 25 rejections I’ll upgrade to a nail.
JJA found himself ungrabbed by the mechanical ducks. They’re slated to go to Strange Horizons next, but I’m toying with the idea of sending them to Cricket, since they might work well as a children’s story. That would mean trimming the story down substantially, but I think I could make it work. Problem is, I don’t want to deal with the story while I’m doing JaNo, and I don’t like the idea of having it sit around for the next 3 weeks when it could be out somewhere.
38-day form rejection of spiders from Strange Horizons arrived in my email this morning. The story had been out long enough that I had my hopes up for at least some personal comments, but oh well. Next up for the spiders is Realms of Fantasy, but the submission will have to wait until after Christmas since I’m heading down to Olympia for the next few days.
