Short Story Collection Excerpt

Seven Wonders of a Once and Future World by Caroline M. Yoachim

My collection comes out on August 16th, one week from today!

If you want a sample of my work, many of the stories are available to read online (see my publications page for a complete list), but I thought it would be fun to post a teaser from one of the two original stories in the collection.

The excerpt below comes from the opening of “On the Pages of a Sketchbook Universe,” a secondary world fantasy novelette.

Publishers Weekly Starred Review!

My collection got a starred review at Publishers Weekly!

From the review:

“Full appreciation of the more science fictional worlds takes time, as Yoachim circles back in successive stories to add layers to major themes: interchangeable or malleable bodies (“Temporary Friends,” “Stone Wall Truth,” “Grass Girl”), displaced consciousness (“The Philosophy of Ships,” “Do Not Count the Withered Ones,” “Pieces of My Body”), time warps (“Rock, Paper, Scissors, Love, Death,” “Harmonies of Time” “Honeybee”) …. Her gift for reshaping and polishing dulled old gems makes Yoachim’s collection truly noteworthy.”

Seven Wonders of a Once and Future world is available for …

Clarion West Write-a-thon!

I’m raising money for Clarion West by participating in this year’s Write-a-thon!

My goal for the first two weeks is to finish revisions on my middle grade novel–Junk Craft Magic, the story of an 11-year-old mixed-race girl who uses arts-and-crafts magic to help some junkyard pixies defeat a hazardous waste monster.

For the rest of the write-a-thon, I’m working on a novella: A space opera with alien-human hybrids! And fire kittens! My goal is to add 14k words (to the novella already in progress).

Want to motivate me to get words written AND support Clarion West? I’m looking for …

My Story is the Cover Story for the March Lightspeed!

Lightspeed Magazine Issue 70

The March issue of Lightspeed Magazine is now available, and my story “Welcome to the Medical Clinic at the Interplanetary Relay Station, Hours Since the Last Patient Death: 0” is the cover story!

The cool cover art is by Reiko Murakami.

Also in this issue of Lightspeed:  Christie Yant did an interview with me, to go along with the story.  We cover allergy shots, SF tropes, and writing advice.  (The interview talks briefly about the story, so I recommend reading the story first.)

Locus Recommended Reading List

The cover story for my collection, “Seven Wonders of a Once and Future World,”  made it onto the Locus Recommended Reading List!  Really thrilled to have my story listed with a bunch of other top-notch work.  A lot of what I’ve already read from the list has been awesome, and I’m looking forward to checking out some of the stories and books that I hadn’t seen yet.

Year in Review: 2015

Numbers

36 stories published:
23 originals
13 reprints

33 acceptances:
1 short story collection
14 original stories
17 reprints
1 non-fiction essay

13 new stories written (45k words*)

* I don’t track my daily wordcount, so my yearly wordcount is based only on finished stories. My actual wordcount is probably somewhat higher. But definitely not high enough. Generating more words is really something that I need to work on for next year.

Year in Review

2015 has been big for me in a lot of ways. I had 23 original stories out this …
